With its tropical rainforest, active volcanoes, deserted ocean beaches, colourful wildlife, perfect climate and friendly people, Costa Rica is well-named 'the Jewel of Central America'. Our amazing multi-activity adventure begins with the ultimate challenge in Costa Rica - the ascent of Cerro Chirripo (3820m / 12530ft), whose summit commands views of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. After rafting on the Pacuare River, we visit Tortuguero, a protected stretch of Caribbean coast where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Heading southwards across the Central American isthmus, we stop off at the famously beautiful Lake Arenal and have the chance to observe Costa Rica’s most active volcano, Arenal from the summit of adjacent Cerro Chato. Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes on earth (the Smithsonian Institute has a permanent observatory on its slopes to monitor seismic activity) and it is usual to be treated to the spectacular sight of lava rivers cascading from the broken cone of the summit. To provide a glimpse of yet another ecosystem, we next transfer to the Rincón de la Vieja region, which boasts four volcanoes and is home to an entirely different collection of bird and animal species. We have two day hikes here, in and around the National Park, encountering different forest zones, each harbouring its own unique species. This part of the trip is an excellent opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts and birders. No visit to Costa Rica would be complete without the chance to sample some of its beach life and, as a finale to this wonderful trip, we take a trip out to the Pacific Ocean for some well-earned R&R. Great restaurants, paradise beaches, sun, sand, sea and surf - all abound. ‘Pura Vida’ is a common saying amongst the locals meaning ‘great life’ and this trip certainly lives up to that, offering a wealth of tropical experiences, unbeatable wildlife, exciting whitewater and an overall relaxed feeling.
Trip Guide
This adventure tour is designed to provide an insight into the many different elements which make up Costa Rica. It is not intended to be a long or continuous trekking trip. However, after a warm-up hike on the volcano Irazu, the trip does start out with a pretty tough 3-day round trip to the summit of Costa Rica’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripo. You do need to be prepared for this and especially for the first day of this trek which involves a 2000m. / 6500ft. climb on steep forest trails. Once this is completed, the remainder of the holiday is more leisurely, with a number of short and longer walks and other adventurous activities, including one day of whitewater rafting.
