South of La Paz, the rarely-visited Cordillera Quimsa Cruz is comprised of more than eighty 5000 metre (16400 feet) peaks. This rugged mountain group has been described as the South American Karakoram and is an area ripe for exploration. After acclimatizing at Lake Titicaca, with visits to important Inca archaeological sites, we transfer to the village of Viloco at the northern end of the range. From here, a 5-day trek takes us into a world of striking rock spires, snow-capped peaks, brilliant blue lakes, alpine meadows, high passes and soaring condors. Continuing our adventure, we then make a 4-day traverse beneath the west and north sides of the very impressive Illimani (6460m./21188ft), Bolivia's third highest peak. Throughout, we follow rarely-used trails and can expect to encounter only local Indian people. Within little more than 2 weeks, this is a chance to experience the charming Andean country of Bolivia at its very best. Yunga Cruz Extension:
Extend your trip with a 4-day continuation of this trek, down into the picturesque cloud forest region of the Yungas, following a challenging and adventurous section of pre-Hispanic pathway, known as the 'Camino Yunga Cruz.' Please see section in trip dossier for further details.
Combining 5 days of walking in the Quimsa Cruz and a 4-day traverse to the north of Illimani, provides a reasonably continuous trek, with a considerable amount of ascent and descent, as we cross several high passes. The trek is similar in terms of its difficulty to the classic Cordillera Real trip, but has 3 fewer days trekking. Our route follows good trails throughout, with underfoot conditions ranging from Inca stone steps, to easy grassy tracks, to rocky passes and scree. All equipment is carried by pack-animals, in this case llamas or mules.
