Grade 4
This spectacular school trip to Namibia takes in all of the country’s most memorable highlights. The Republic of Namibia is a vast, sparsely populated country situated along the south Atlantic coast of Africa, bordered by South Africa in the south, Angola and Zambia in the north and Botswana and Zimbabwe in the east. With a surface area of 824,268 square kilometres, it is more than 3 times the size of the United Kingdom and yet has a population of fewer than 2 million people. Much of the country is high plateau-land, with the long strip of the Namib Desert extending along the country’s desolate west coast. By contrast, the capital, Windhoek, sitting at an elevation of 1650 metres in the central highlands of the Khomas Region, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with excellent hotels, restaurants and shops. It is the diversity of Namibia which makes it such an obvious choice as a destination for the adventure traveller and school group. For the most part during this trip, we will be camping, staying at fixed camps with good facilities and enjoying the open-air lifestyle, including evening meals cooked over an open fire. Our itinerary also includes a couple of nights in A-Frame chalet accommodation at Swakopmund, which will give us the chance for a bit or R&R in this unusual coastal resort town. There are plenty of optional activities to choose from at Swakopmund; from Sandboarding, Dolphin Cruises and Quad biking to getting high above the Namib Desert in a Hot Air Balloon. This great school adventure includes many of the major attractions. We have the option to do some walking in the Naukluft Mountains and amongst the dunes at Sossusvlei and take time out to experience the forbidding Skeleton Coast, with its flamingo and seal colonies. Passing through spectacular Damaraland, we stop off at Twyfelfontein where we will be able to see some of the best rock-art in Africa, including both inscriptions and paintings, a legacy of the San (Bushman) people. For those with naturalist inclinations, the best part of the trip may well be the 3 days of game driving on the south side of the Etosha Panand the evenings spent looking out for animal visitors to the floodlit waterholes of Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni. On our return journey southwards towards Windhoek, we then have an overnight stop at the AfriCat Foundation, where orphaned cheetahs, leopards and lions are rehabilitated to the wild. If further incentive were needed to add Namibia to your immediate travel plans, the country is also safe, inexpensive and blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year. Why wait?
Educational perspective
The cold Benguela Current flows south to north along the Skeleton Coast and causes regular fog, which brings life-supporting moisture to the plants and animals of this desert shoreline.
Amend or Extend
Adventurous schools might consider the 3-day round trip hike to the summit of Brandberg, the country's high point. Or, for further cultural interest, why not include a visit to a Himba village.
