Grade 4
From the bustling capital city of Bangkok, we take the overnight train to Chiang Mai in the remote northern highlands. This is a region of forested valleys and extraordinary hilltribes, including the Hmong and Karen people. We visit temples, see elephants at work and enjoy a homestay in a Thai village, before moving on to Um Phang, close to the border with Myanmar. Here, we trek into a landscape of jungleclad crags and amazing multi-tiered waterfalls, with a day of whitewater rafting included. A visit to the island of Ko Samet, close to Bangkok, will provide a relaxing finale – on the beach.

Educational perspective

Thailand’s colourful hilltribes largely continue to follow their traditional ways of life, a fact which makes them particularly interesting from a cultural perspective.

Amend or Extend
There are several short trekking options close to Chiang Mai that could be included. Alternatively, you could add one or more days of community
project work to your trip.
