Copper Canyon is the name given to an area of deeply cut valleys within Mexico’s Sierra Madre. At the heart of this rugged region, the silver mines of Batopilas (begun by the Spanish in the early 18th century) were accessed via a 100-mile trail from the town of Carichic. Recently rediscovered, this fantastic trekking route takes us via forested ridges, high mesas and deep gorges, stopping off at riverside camps, welcome hot springs and the isolated settlements of Tarahumara Indians.
Trip Guide
Over the course of 9 days hiking, we will be covering a distance of approximately 100 miles / 160 kilometres. We trek for 5 days, then meet up with our support vehicles for a short transfer, to avoid the least exciting part of the Silver Trail. A further 4 days of trekking takes us to journey’s end in Batopilas. We will walk for 5 or 6 hours on most of the days, following a good trail most of the time. There will, however, be sections with rougher underfoot conditions – scree, bare rock and river crossings. We will be accompanied by mules which will carry our trek bags and the group’s communal gear, tents, food etc. Group members will carry just a daysack with essentials for the day’s walk. The altitudes attained during this trip will not cause problems in respect of acclimatisation. At the time of year that we will be visiting Mexico (autumn through to spring) it will not be extremely hot during the day. However, we might encounter day-time temperatures as high as 28°C / 82°F and sun protection and adequate hydration are important considerations.
The trip pages are only a brief summary of the details available within our trip dossiers. It is important that you read the full day to day description and further information for this trip before making your booking.
