A new classic trekking holiday in the Himalayas of India along Curzon's Trail in the Garwhal region. Following a route trekked by Lord Curzon in 1905 and by Shipton and Tilman 30 years later, this excellent itinerary traverses the western edge of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary in the Garwhal Himalaya of India. From Delhi we take an overnight sleeper train and then drive to the hill station at Ranikhet. After just a couple of days trekking, we reach the high meadow of Bedni Bugyal, a famously scenic location with a skyline dominated to the north-west by the Himalayan peaks of Trisul (7120m) and Nanda Ghunti. Here, there is the option of a rest day or a tough trekking excursion to the enigmatic and spectacularly located pool of Roopkund (5000m). A further week of trekking takes us through forest and farmland and by way of a series of ridges, the last of which we cross at the Kuari Pass (4268m). Changabang, Kamet and Nanda Devi are just 3 of the Himalayan giants visible from this sublime viewpoint. This is a superb trekking holiday into the Himalayas of India and an unforgettable journey into the sacred Hindu territory of Garhwal.

Trip Guide

This is a very scenic 10-day trek, in an area seldom visited by other trekkers. Generally the route follows ancient trade routes that offer very good walking conditions. The usual day’s walk will be around 5 hours - although on the optional day-hike to Roopkund and on the day that we cross the Kuari Pass, we are likely to be walking for at least 8 or 9 hours. There are several ridges and passes to cross during the trek and this has influenced us to give the trip the DEMANDING grade. (NOTE: Without optional excursion to Roopkund, we would have rated the trip at the upper end of MODERATE). Trekking up to Roopkund at 5000 metres will be especially tough from the perspective of acclimatisation. Apart from this one day, the altitude attained on the trip is relatively modest and should cause few problems. Overall this is an excellent walking holiday, both for experienced trekkers and for Himalayan novices looking for a short, but reasonably demanding trek.
