The southern edge of the Central Asian republics is defined by the rocky barrier of the Pamirs, of which the Fann Mountains are a part. This little-visited range has numerous snow-capped peaks above 5000 metres (16,400 feet) and a maze of excellent trekking routes which traverse rocky valleys and cross high passes, with far-reaching views. We have put together an 8-day trek into this rugged and picturesque range, where semi-nomadic Tajik shepherds graze their flocks of sheep and goats alongside crystal clear lakes. Our access to these mountains is through neighbouring Uzbekistan and this allows us to include unforgettable sightseeing visits to the stunning Silk Road cities of Tashkent and Samarkand. Established some 2500 years ago and known as 'The Gem of the East', the city of Samarkand is one of the wonders of the world. Its numerous ornamented, mosaic-clad monuments, with their intricate facades and turquoise-tiled domes are guaranteed to take your breath away. Central Asia at its best!

The trekking conditions on this trip are good, generally following clear, dry paths through rocky mountain terrain. The routes we follow have been used by local shepherds and their animals for generations. We will walk for 5 to 6 hours on most days, stopping for lunch after 3 or 4 hours. There might be as much as 900 metres (3000 feet) of ascent and descent, with some steep up and down. Trekking at altitudes above 3000 metres (10,000 feet) makes greater demands on the body than walking at low elevations and can be challenging even for fit hikers. You should ensure that you are physically prepared for the trek.
