A delightful and colourful walking and touring adventure holiday to explore the amazing country of Laos. Rated by many travellers as the most charming country in SE Asia, Laos is the least developed and most enigmatic of the three former French Indochinese states. Bordered by Burma(Myanmar) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west, Laos has a fascinating history extending from the 14th century independent kingdom of Lan Xang once known as the ‘Land of a Million Elephants’, through the period of French colonialism of the 18th and 19th centuries, to its independence in 1949 and subsequent status as a communist republic established in 1975. Throughout these tumultuous changes Laos has largely managed to preserve its own unique traditional way of life, and the modern day visitor will find a warm welcome from its friendly and relaxed people. Our brand new walking and touring adventure holiday in Laos features a diverse itinerary which allows us to explore the best of this fascinating country. From Luang Prabang, a World Heritage site and one of the region’s most attractive towns, we will be walking into the homeland of a number of colourful hilltribes, such as the Khmu. Spending 4 days in this area, amongst striking limestone outcrops, picturesque waterfalls and rice fields, we also take a Mekong boat trip to the Buddhist temple inside Pak Ou Caves. Travelling south to Vang Vieng, we have a free day in this delightful town, with options to do some kayaking, biking or independent trekking. Moving on to the capital, Vientiane, we have a full city tour and also make an excursion up the Hin Boun River, which includes 2 nights at a riverside Eco-Lodge and an exploration by boat of the extensive Kong Lor cave system. Laos remains unspoiled and trekking and touring is the perfect way to enjoy this country. See Laos now !
Trip Guide
This trip is a mixture of touring and sightseeing with three full days of trekking within the itinerary. We have given this trip the overall grading of ‘EASY’. Generally, the underfoot conditions during the treks and also while visiting various sights on foot, are relatively easy, following good paths throughout. It should be noted however, that it will be quite hot and humid in the tropical forest and this will have an effect on trekking performance. You will need to ensure you are physically prepared for the trekking element of the trip and you should be comfortable with walking for 4 - 7 hours in a day (with several rests) including extended uphill sections.
