An exotic walking and touring adventure holiday trekking to the summit of Mount Fuji in Japan. Our unique adventure holiday to Japan begins at the extravagant Fukagawa Hachiman Festival in Tokyo, held only once every 3 years. We then take the ‘Bullet Train’ to Kyoto, where we have time for sightseeing and for a refreshing day of sawanobori, the Japanese version of ghyll-scrambling. Three days of walking in the Japanese Alps culminates in the ascent of Nishihodaka Peak (2908m) and this is followed by a visit to an aikido centre or dojo, with an optional lesson in this traditional and non-aggressive martial art. Continuing our journey to Kawaguchiko, we attend one of the country’s biggest fire festivals and spend a rest day at this lakeside resort town, with plenty of opportunity to enjoy the views of sacred Mount Fuji (3766m). Finally, our ascent over 2 days trekking to the summit of Mount Fuji, the highest peak in Japan, is a great way to end this diverse and culturally fascinating walking and touring adventure holiday. This holiday will be led by Estella Dean. Estella is a British Citizen who first came to Japan 20 years ago (arriving there in a two person yacht after sailing for 8 months). She has lived in Japan since, working as an English teacher. She speaks fluent Japanese and holds black belts in aikido and joujutsu. Estella is also a qualified outdoor leader and is a founder member of the Kansai International Outdoor Club (IOC). As a member of IOC she has organised and led trekking, mountain biking, skiing, snow shoeing and sailing events all over Japan. Estella who has a long history with KE on trips throughout Asia, has put together this exciting and very full walking and touring holiday using her local knowledge to get the very best out of a two week visit to Japan.

Trip Guide

This trip is a mixture of touring and trekking, encompassing a wide variety of cultural experiences. There are five days of trekking within the itinerary. Generally, the underfoot conditions during the treks are relatively easy, mostly following good paths throughout. The ridge walk to the summit of Nishihodaka is a little exposed in places and there are some sections of loose trail. Some rock scrambling is necessary at the summit. There are also some sections of moderately steep and loose trail during the ascent of Mount Fuji although these are short-lived and the trail is very well maintained and protected with chains. It should be noted that trekking at altitudes above 3000m. / 10,000ft. makes greater demands on the body than walking at low elevations, and is of itself challenging even for fit hikers. Also, during the visit to the Shiga Mountains there is the option to take part in ghyll scrambling, including jumping into deep pools. During this activity the accent is on having fun rather than technical climbing, and instruction and all safety equipment is provided. You will need to ensure you are physically prepared for the trekking element of the trip and for the ascent of Mount Fuji. You should be comfortable with walking uphill for 5 or 6 hours in a day (with several rests).
