Real adventure trekking holiday walking in the Tien Shan Mountains of Kazakhstan. Extending for thousands of kilometres across Central Asia, the Tien Shan is one of the world's greatest mountain ranges. This brilliant 2-week trekking adventure holiday to Kazakhstan takes us into the most spectacular part of the range and we'll be walking to the basecamps of each of its biggest peaks, Peak Pobeda (7439m / 24,406ft) and Khan Tengri (7010m / 22,999ft). From the former capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty, we drive to the Kirghizstan border to begin our trekking adventures. Walking along shepherds' trails through pine forest and alpine meadows, we will then be trekking across the 4000 metre (13,125 foot) Tyuz Pass to reach the remote Inylchek Valley with its numerous glaciers and towering rocky summits. Here we'll explore this glaciated wilderness in the Tien Shan and we'll also have the option of a day walking excursion to see ice-bound Merzbacher Lake and also have lots of time to admire Khan Tengri - one of the world's most striking peaks. A helicopter transfer from the heart of this glaciated wilderness allows us to spend as much time as possible trekking in the high mountains and to explore the Tien Shan and also provides an exciting finale to our walking experiences. This is a great short trekking adventure holiday and a real taste of Kazakhstan and the Tien Shan.

This is a fantastic trek, starting out amongst pleasant foothills, with lush grass and forest. After just a couple of days, however, we reach a high and glaciated region and the remainder of our route follows the South Inylchek Glacier - either on it or just beside it. We will walk for an average of 6 hours a day, covering no more than 15 kilometres (9.5 miles) per day. Our progress is slowed by the altitude and by the sometimes difficult terrain. The underfoot conditions on the glacier mostly consist of rubble and moraine debris. We may encounter bare ice, but where we do, the surface will generally be granulated and grit filled and can easily be walked on with ordinary boots. Any crevasses we encounter can easily be avoided. Crampons and ice-axes are not required. The trip is given a DEMANDING grade on account of the relative remoteness of the trekking and the ruggedness of the terrain.
