This sensational trip combines a week's trek on the tranquil Rongai Route to the peak of Kilimanjaro, with the best short safari in Tanzania. Crossing lovely, open country on the north side of Africa's highest mountain, our tried and tested Rongai itinerary incorporates an additional day for acclimatisation. Straightforward trekking (with a challenging summit day) leads to a magical viewpoint at Uhuru peak on the 'Roof of Africa'. Descending from the summit, we have a night in Arusha before heading out to experience what is arguably the world's finest game viewing - in the Tarengire and Lake Manyara national parks and in the simply unique Ngorongoro Crater. A series of game drives in specialist safari vehicles will allow us to sample each of these locations and give us a good chance to spot the 'big five' of elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion. If you are only going to do one East African trip, then this one is hard to beat!Kilimanjaro is a big mountain and via the route that we have chosen to undertake involves around 4000 metres of ascent in just 5 days. Generally, there are excellent trails to follow, although on the upper part of the route we will have to negotiate some sections of loose scree. There will also be some snow and ice on the crater rim. The very long summit day on Kilimanjaro will provide a test for anyone, as much for the very long descent to the Horombo Camp as for the climb itself. This trip has been given the DEMANDING grade on account of the quite considerable height gain and because there are a couple of long trekking days. The Safari at the end of the trip is a time for relaxing as well as exciting game viewing.
