The Jotunheimen of Norway is a paradise for a Nordic ski touring adventure holiday. The huge bulge of south, central Norway is almost entirely made up of mountains, with the most impressive part being the Jotunheimen, the 'Land of the Giants'. Crossing the south side of the Jotunheimen range, our ski touring itinerary leads through high valleys surrounded by a host of 2000m/6560ft peaks. A day of ski touring instruction at Gjendesheim will get everyone into shape before we set off on the first leg of our journey across the 20 km expanse of frozen Lake Gjende. There's more uphill on the next stage to Olavsbu, as we ski through the dramatic Rauddalen (red valley) with its 8 small lakes. A round trip from here by way Lake Langvatnet takes us to the high point of this ski touring holiday in the Jotunheimen of Norway and includes the option to ascend an easy peak. The breathtaking final day of Nordic ski touring traverses superlative mountain scenery to Fondsbu. This ski touring adventure holiday is flexible enough to work for both novices and for those more practiced in the art of Nordic ski touring. All ski equipment can be hired locally in Norway.

Trip Guide

During the course of this ski touring holiday, you will cover approximately 75 kilometres (47 miles) on your skis, averaging 17 kilometres (10.5 miles) per day on each of 4 days and with one shorter introductory day. There will also be some survival skills training and the opportunity to practice Telemark technique. Our journey across the south side of the Jotunheimen finds the easiest way through the deep valleys of this mountainous region. The skiing is relatively straightforward, with a maximum of around 400 metres (1300 feet) of ascent on any of the days. There are no very steep ascents or descents on the route. The trail is generally marked by branches stuck into the snow and we are likely to be following the tracks of other skiers. Since we are carrying all of our personal equipment, it is important to take only the essentials. With a bit of care, it should be possible to keep pack weight down to around 8 kgs. The guide will carry communal safety gear including snow shovels etc. Regular cross-country skiers, carrying such light rucksacks, will find this tour to be quite straightforward. For those who have little cross-country skiing experience it will be tougher. Simply coming to terms with the techniques and rhythm of moving on skis on level ground will take a couple of days.
