Grade 5
This excellent School Group Adventure starts out with 4 days of lightweight backpacking between well-equipped mountain huts at the heart of the Julian Alps. Following a high ridge above lush alpine valleys, the trek traverses several 2000 metre / 6600 feet peaks, en route to the beautiful 'valley of the 7 lakes', beneath the spectacular triplesummited Triglav (2864m / 9451ft). Then, from the pretty lakeside town of Bled, there is a change of transport, with mountain bikes and whitewater rafts combining to provide a day of adventure. The concluding day of guided sightseeing in Skofja Loka and Ljubljana highlights Slovenia's rich history.
Educational perspective
Formerly a part of Austria and later incorporated within Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained its independence as recently as 1992. Evidence of this varied history is reflected in the architecture of its towns and cities.
Amend or Extend
To see more of Slovenia, travel to the country's tiny Adriatic coastline, stopping off en route at the immense Skocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
