Grade 9
For this special school group itinerary, we have chosen to make our ascent of Kilimanjaro via the relatively remote and quiet Rongai Route. Located in the north-eastern corner of Tanzania, on the border with Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro (5894m.) is Africa’s biggest peak. This is one of the few places on earth where it is possible to ascend through misty equatorial jungle and then cross high moorland with spectacular views, to finally reach a breathless, snow-capped summit. This is the most gradual of the routes to Kilimanjaro’s summit and the most sensible option for school groups. To maximise our chances of success on this very high peak, we start out with a series of 4 short trekking days, gaining height gradually, and then spend a rest and acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn. Our approach to the mountain begins with the long, but interesting drive around to Rongai on the northern slopes, close to the Kenyan border. In comparison to the routes on the south side of the mountain, the Rongai Route is little-used and provides something of a wilderness experience. We will be unlikely to meet any other trekkers during our week-long ascent. Trekking through farmland, forest and open moor, our spectacular campsite at Mawenzi Tarn and the long final day's climb to the mountain's summit at Uhuru Peak, are highlights of this exceptional schools adventure holiday.
Educational perspective
Gaining height on Kilimanjaro, a fascinating range of ecotypes is displayed - from equatorial jungle and then high moorland to the bare rock and ice of the summit plateau.
Amend and Extend
Add 3 days to your itinerary and include a fantastic safari experience in the Tarengire National Park and at the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. The ‘Big Five’ of elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo can all be seen.
