Into the Golden TriangleA popular and fun mountain bike holiday into the heart of the Golden Triangle in Thailand. A world away from 'The Beach', there is a very different side to Thailand that presents excellent adventure biking opportunities. Travelling to the northern border territory of Chiang Mai, we explore by bike the homeland of colourful hilltribes such as the Karen, Akha, Lisu, and Palaung people. Biking through mango orchards, our cycling route continues through rice fields, lychee plantations and teak forest in the shadow of Thailand’s highest mountains. The biking is mostly on quiet back roads and dirt roads, as well as some cycling on village paths and elephant trails. Close to the border with Burma, trading mountain bike for elephant and boat transport we visit a Lahu village, staying overnight as guests of a local family. Biking an amazing ridge-top road ultimately takes us to Sop Ruak at the heart of the Golden Triangle. After a sightseeing bike ride to the temple at Chiang Saen, where the views extend into neighbouring Burma and Laos, we bike Thailand’s most exciting mountain biking trail, the off-road descent from Wat Doi Suthep above Chiang Mai. On our return to Bangkok, a ‘night on the town’ in this vibrant city provides a fitting end to this excellent cycling adventure.

Ride Guide

SEMI-SLICK ADVENTURE. From backroads and elephant trails to village paths with a hint of sweet singletrack, it’s classic KE point-to-point riding with only a few transfers and a suitable trip for most regular riders with some off-road experience and a reasonable level of fitness. There are some steep road climbs. Vehicle support is available for most of the route. Average 55 km/34 miles a day. This trip has something for everyone, from steep climbs and fast descents, to more steady riding through rice fields and fascinating tribal villages, well off the beaten track. We’ve even managed to include an elephant ride! The resulting holiday is aimed at regular mountain bikers with some off-road experience looking for challenge, culture, adventure and exploration. A stay with a family in their tribal village home will be an unforgettable experience.
