Karakoram to Hindu KushStarting with a spectacular flight into Skardu, the capital of the high mountain kingdom of Baltistan, we find ourselves in a land made for mountain biking. Known as “Little Tibet” this area is surrounded by the highest peaks and largest glaciers in the Karakoram and the first few days are spent biking around Khaplu and Hushe villages, which lie beneath some of the largest granite spires in the world. The aim of our trip is then to bike to Hunza via the Deosai Plains, a vast plateau with an average altitude of just above 4000 metres. This alpine grassland wilderness is the home to one of the last species of Himalayan Brown bear, plus an array of other rare wildlife and was turned into a national park only a few years ago. For most of the year the area is cut off by snow and the rough jeep road that we will cycle across is only really open from July to the end of September. After a side trip to the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest peak in the world we will descend all the way to bazaar town of Gilgit on the Karakoram Highway. A short transfer will then deposit us in the Hunza Valley, renowned as one of the most spectacular on earth. Enormous glaciers descend to the roadside and picturesque villages cling precariously to the steep valley sides. Starting out from Passu we will descend to the old Hunza capital of Karimabad, beneath the towering Rakaposhi (7788m/25550ft), we ride a series of wild jeep roads and the KKH all the way back to Gilgit. We will finish by driving all the way back down the famous KKH to Rawalpindi, a truly amazing journey.

NB: This itinerary replaces the earlier advertised route across the Shandur Pass into Chitral.
