A short trekking holiday adventure in the Himalayas of India walking in the Dharamsala area and across the Indrahar Pass. North of the plains of Punjab and rising to around 5000 metres (16,400 feet), the first foothills of this part of the Himalaya in India are known as the Dhaula Dhar. Here, the British Raj established several hill-stations, including Dharamsala and nearby McLeodganj, home of Tibet's popular leader, the Dalai Lama. After a day to explore this vibrant Buddhist place of pilgrimage, we'll then be trekking through pretty villages to explore high pastures on the south side of the range, following a centuries-old walking trail which reaches its high point at the Indrahar Pass (4425m / 14515ft). During the course of our trekking journey, we will meet the fascinating Gaddi people, Hindu shepherds whose menfolk spend the summer months in the highest valleys with their flocks of sheep and goats. Walking down to Bharmour in the Chamba Valley, we find a unique collection of ruined temples and palaces to explore, hidden in the forest of this little-visited highland area of the Indian Himalaya - a photographer's delight. This very pleasant trekking adventure holiday captures the perfect balance of spiritual and physical enlightenment.
Trip Guide
The trekking element of this holiday is relatively short and our route follows generally good trails. The crossing of the Indrahar Pass includes some steeper sections of path and underfoot conditions can be more difficult. There are some exposed sections of trail on the descent from the pass. The altitudes attained are not extreme and we would not expect group members to have problems in this respect. There are 3 short days of walking on the trip and 2 longer days, each involving around 7 hours of walking.
