Lake Atitlan, Guatemala - Mountain biking in GuatemalaHaving run our first, pioneering mountain biking trip to this wild and intriguing country several years ago, KE's Guatemala trip has continued to evolve and to receive rave reviews. Guatemala is a mountain bikers paradise. Our Guatemala bike trip begins in Antigua, the beautiful former capital and once the Spanish center of administration for the whole of Central America and Mexico. Here, we sample the wealth of awesome single-track found amongst the surrounding volcanic peaks. A mixture of dirt road biking and single-track then takes us to Lake Atitlan (1562m/5125ft), described as the most beautiful lake in the world, with its towering volcanoes, azure water and Mayan inhabitants. This is a full-on trip aimed at regular mountain bikers with a taste for the undiscovered. Working with one of the few ‘real mountain bikers' in Guatemala, the first half of the trip will cover a lot of single-track that has thus far been biked only by the locals and KE groups. The second half of the trip will be more of a journey, following dirt tracks into the remote region of the Cuchumatanes Mountains. Here, we embark on some real ‘backcountry’ biking beneath frosty 3600 metre (almost 12,000 ft) peaks and have a rare glimpse into the local Indian life, as we visit some of the country’s finest fiestas and markets. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting routes and one thing that we can guarantee about this part of the trip - is that there will be lots of climbing and stunning views! Overall, this is a spectacular and quite unique cycling trip. Guatemala is probably the wildest country in the area - but also the friendliest.

FAT TYRE ADVENTURE. The first half of the trip follows established tracks used by local bikers - technical singletrack and challenging in places, but usually fast, flowing, big grin routes. We then take to the quiet dirt roads and gnarly jungle trails between the villages of the remote Cuchumatanes region. There is no flat land in Guatemala; each day involves a long climb followed by a downhill blast. This is a trip for regular, off-road bikers with a good level of physical fitness and technical ability. On some sections the support vehicle is available, but is not able to follow the bikes on the singletrack and more difficult rides. Average 40 km/25 miles per day.
