Karzok Monastery, Ladakh, Indian HimalayaTrek across the high plains of the Chang Tang, close to Ladakh's border with Tibet and climb Yalangnong (6226m / 20,420ft). The remote and rarely-visited plains of eastern Ladakh are coloured in a few widespread locations by unbelievably beautiful lakes, including Tso Morari. Rising above this unique landscape are numerous snow capped peaks which present an irresistible challenge to adventurous trekkers. After acclimatising and sightseeing in the Ladakhi capital of Leh, a week of trekking takes us across several 5000 metre (16,400 foot) passes to our basecamp above Karzok at the northern end of Tso Morari. Our objective here is the glaciated peak of Yalangnong which provides a testing but technically easy climb and outrageous views. The combination of a great trek and a straightforward climb, makes this an ideal choice for a first Himalayan climbing trip. Whilst for those who may already have climbed Stok Kangri, this trip offers the opportunity to make a welcome return to this very special part of the world.

We have 5 days acclimatising to the altitude in Ladakh (3500 metres / 11,500 feet at Leh), during which time we will visit several of the monasteries of the upper Indus Valley and also drive up to the Khardung La. The time that we actually spend on trek and climbing the peak of Yalangnong is 13 days. Generally, on our trek across from the Leh / Manali road to the village of Karzok, we will be following good trails, which are used by the nomadic herders and their stock as they move between grazing areas. High up on our approach to Yalangnong, we will encounter trackless areas and some potentially rougher underfoot conditions. This is not a particularly sustained trek and we have allowed plenty of time for resting and acclimatisation. However, the generally very high altitude will be a factor and the numerous passes that we cross on our route will feel quite tough.
