The summit of Mount Stanley, The Rwenzoris, UgandaUganda's impressive and rarely-visited Rwenzori mountains extend north-south for some 110 kilometres/70 miles and rise to over 5000 metres/16000 feet. The Rwenzoris arguably boast the finest high mountain walking in all of Africa. Accompanied by Bakonjo porters, our tough circuit trek negotiates dense jungle to reach the more open, alpine valleys above. Crossing 2 high passes (c.4300m./14100ft) and overnighting in scenically-located mountain huts, this extraordinary Ugandan expedition holiday also includes the option to ascend the 2 highest peaks in the Rwenzoris; Mount Baker (4842m./15881ft) and the Margherita summit of Mount Stanley (5109m./16758ft). Given clear conditions, the summit views from these relatively straightforward, snow-capped peaks are simply unforgettable. Recent KE Rwenzori groups have enjoyed good weather, climbed each of the 3 peaks and met just a handful of other trekkers. This is a genuine mountain wilderness holiday in a country known as 'The Pearl of Africa.'

Trip Guide

This brilliant trek takes in some of the most rugged and breathtakingly beautiful scenery imaginable. Although short, in terms of the absolute distances covered, this trek is not to be taken lightly. It is important to maintain concentration throughout this challenging trek. This is a remote area and the underfoot conditions are as difficult as any you are ever likely to find; dense jungle, deep mud, slippery tree roots and boulders are all par for the course and you should be prepared for this. There will be some quite long and taxing days of trekking. The climbing on Stanley and Baker is technically easy, but the day-climbs on each of the peaks will be long. A degree of competence on rock scrambles and in the use of crampons and a single ice-axe is a requirement. Due to glacial retreat, there is now a short, steep wall at the foot of the final ridge on the Margherita summit of Mount Stanley which involves a couple of moves of Severe Grade (4a) rock climbing.
